It’s interesting to watch as events unfold around us. There has been an acceleration toward confrontation. Events are unfolding at break neck speed. It’s almost impossible to keep up as the world and rules change almost daily.
As we have struggled to understand and keep up with the massive amounts of information/disinformation bombarding us, it has also brought about an enormous sense of anger over injustice and the need to stand for justice. That’s good right?
The cry to stand up for those who have been abused, maligned and discriminated against runs deep within our moral fabric. Jesus was all about justice and fighting injustice.
But unfortunately in our zeal to correct a wrong, we can get it wrong.
Moses is a great example of this. One with a call to be a deliverer, he became a destroyer initially when he watched a fellow Hebrew endure abuse and attack by an Egyptian. When Moses saw the abuse, he became enraged at the injustice and stepped in. He looked around (which means he knew full well what he was about to do) and then killed the Egyptian. Moses’ destiny was to be a deliverer, yet in that moment, when he acted from his intense desire to right the injustice, he became a destroyer. Why?
Because he reacted to the crime and took it up in his heart as an offense. He was triggered by the wrong and then he acted in the flesh. Right heart. Wrong response.
And offense always brings with it deception which blinds us to the truth. The problem is once an offense has taken hold, we are unable to see clearly no matter what we think. That is the very nature of deception. It blinds us…even when our heart is right…it creates a wrong response.
And so in our country believer now stands against believer as we view the same wrongs, but from different vantage points. All of us desire justice to right injustice. So which direction is the right direction?
This has become a Civil War and I am reminded again of the statement from the recent Avengers movie: Civil War. Because it is truly a prophetic declaration of the Church.
The villain reveals his strategy and this is the key. He knows he cannot win against The Avengers, unless he can divide them. He reveals this strategy when he states:
“An empire toppled by its enemies can rise again, but one which crumbles from within? That’s dead… forever.”
His effective strategy is to sow dischord and play on their deep desire for justice. It erupts as righteous indignation. It seems right. It seems righteous. But is it? Is it the right heart, but the wrong response?
As believer’s line up against each other in a stand-off battle to fight for what each side truly believes is the right course for justice, it is an age-old strategy to diminish our effective strength to focus on one important issue while it gets us to take our eyes off the bigger issue. The issue isn’t who is more moral or ethical or right. The issue is for the destiny of this nation. This is not about people but destiny. What were we called to do?
May we recognize that none of us walks in complete truth and understanding and that only by the Spirit, and as we choose to walk in humility, can we even begin to understand how to walk together. But especially in these last days, walk together we must. It is only as we walk together, united, that we will possess the strength to stand against our common Foe and win this battle being waged–the battle which seeks to silence our voice, His Voice. It is a battle for Truth. When we take up offense to an injustice and become enraged by it, like Moses we can turn from deliverer to destroyer and not even recognize that we have shifted sides in our fight for justice. That is the essence of the Pharisee. They couldn’t see it either—and they crucified the true Deliverer.
The word of the Lord came to Haggai…
“Tell Zerubbabel governor of Judah that I am going to shake the heavens and the earth. I will overturn royal thrones and shatter the power of the foreign kingdoms. I will overthrow chariots and their drivers; horses and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother.
“‘On that day,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘I will take you, my servant Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will make you like my signet ring, for I have chosen you,’ declares the Lord Almighty.”
We must not take our eyes off the true battle. We must remember that this battle is NOT with the person standing next to us. It is not about a politician. Do not forget who the real enemy is here. At one time we were on the same side. What has happened to divide us from this truth?
If this is truly our heart then we must all recognize that ALL of us can be deceived for when we take up an issue over an offense with righteous indignation, even when our hearts are right, it can create that open door for deception.
So can we each be willing to humble ourselves and pray, “Lord, please reveal your truth to us. If there is any offense in me, or any deception that has blinded me from truth, please reveal it to me now and peel back any strategy that has taken me off your course.”
And in so doing may we reconcile and return to our call….together so that it will negate the strategy to divide us so that we are not toppled from within, but link arms for Him.
